RUMBLE OF THE VITZ
Toyota
vitz
Also going by the name Yaris, it has successfully
managed to remain relevant in the crowded hatchbacks market. It is definitely a
top contender and a great alternative to other high end hatchbacks.
Design
It is a significant looker. From the 2005 model
onwards the design has transformed into a modern look that is bigger and
smoother. It also keeps a sophisticated charm and is more refined. The 2013
model is a significant looker. It is available in 3 door and 5 door body
styles.
Interior
It offers great space inside but is small enough to
squeeze through really tight streets. It comes stocked with a few gizmos such
as power windows, central locking, CD player, air conditioning and interior
leather trim that contain anti-bacterial coating.
The dash also has a clean
finish with all the controls visible and reachable. It also has safety measures
such as twin airbags at the front and also scores impressively on the safety
ratings. The rear seats can also fold to increase luggage space. The boot is big
enough to carry a sizable travelling bag.
Engines
and transmission
The vitz comes with engine sizes ranging from 1,
1.3, 1.4 and 1.5L under the hood. There is also a diesel option in addition to
the petrol engines. The engines churn out average bursts of power and speed
unless you pick up the sports version that you can push a little further.
However, even with that don’t expect something that does 0-100 kph in 5
seconds. J.
The car offers both automatic and manual transmission
Steering,
ride and handling
Behind the wheel, the experience is close to
excellent. The visuals are clear, the controls are within reach and some
options even offer controls on the steering wheel. The ride is smooth enough but
not great and the handling and stability scores a 3 out of 5.
Running
costs
It is definitely a car to consider when looking for
reliable and economical transportation. The car has great fuel economy and can
do from 15km/l and can go up to 30km/l depending on the model, year of the
manufacture, engine and the environment. Parts are easily and readily available
in Kenya so it definitely won’t cost that much in maintenance.
It is averagely priced. The used low spec versions
can start at Kshs 450,000 while full spec versions can hit a million. The car
however doesn’t lose its resale value drastically like some German
counterparts.
Verdict
The Good:
It has great space and is very economical. It is also adequately equipped and
the rear seat can slide.
The Bad:
The
transmission does not offer performance; the ride can be a bit bouncy. It
offers an average drive. It won’t spark the free speed spirit in you. The
interior is not vibrant enough.
